Dear ECU Community,
As we near the end of the fall term, I’ve been reflecting on another year at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (ECU). Each community member has played a crucial part in making 2025 extraordinary, contributing to our bold vision and becoming part of our ongoing legacy of taking risks and creating work that truly matters.
In October, we stepped into our centennial year with momentum, welcoming new visitors to campus and seeing renewed energy across the university and with community partners. The proclamation from the City of Vancouver, our Open House and exhibition in the Libby Leshgold Gallery set the tone for what our centennial year represents – a moment to reconnect, celebrate our history and invite more people into the story of ECU. Thoughtful conversations with Ian Wallace and John Vaillant added further insight and inspiration. These moments are just the beginning of a full year of activity as we honour 100 years in the making.
As President, it’s my privilege to have the opportunity to share the work of our incredible community with people outside our campus walls. Our stories help others see art and design education through a different lens, demonstrating how creative practice transforms the world around us. The Health Design Lab’s partnership with B.C. Cancer, which aims to improve access to supportive care, and Kevin Eastwood’s documentary that highlights the impact of BC wildfires are just a few examples of projects that show how our collective efforts address real-world issues through creativity. Telling these stories is not just about listing our achievements, but demonstrating the influence that students, alums, faculty and staff bring through their contributions.
The world is changing. Yet, the value of making, iteration and experimentation feels more vital than ever. As a practice-based university, we are well placed to meet uncertainty with curiosity, collaboration and exploratory problem-solving. With stronger systems and digital foundations coming into place in alignment with our Strategic Plan, I am optimistic in our ability to navigate the path ahead and emerge stronger than before.
These past few months have been an intensive stretch for our community. With the university closed from December 23 to January 2, 2025, I hope the break provides you with an opportunity for rest and reflection. Whether you are with friends, family or chosen family, spending time in nature or simply finding moments of solitude, may the holidays offer the renewal we all need for the year ahead. If you find yourself looking for additional support during this season, please remember that resources are available to all students, faculty and staff.
I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to faculty, staff and students for their level of commitment and hard work this term. Your care and resilience are inspiring. Thank you for your dedication and contributions to what has made this university a crucial anchor of culture and creative expression in Vancouver, British Columbia and beyond.
Wishing you and yours a bright and rejuvenating holiday season.
Warm regards,
Dr. Trish Kelly
