Drawing Quarters | ie Gallery
Fifteen students from a third year drawing studio summer course were asked by their instructor to create collaborative drawings, incentivized by a final installation and week-long exhibition.
The assignment was developed in the interest of a pedagogical practice, which highlights drawing as a dynamic and evolving practice, and encourages collective participatory creative acts. The parameters for this project included working simultaneously or in tandem, relinquishing control of a singular voice, merging aesthetic sensibilities and producing a final work that carries both narrative possibilities and visual cohesion.
Through this process, a total of four groups produced numerous drawings, demonstrating the challenges and successes of a collective praxis, promoting adaptability/flexibility of each individual's practice, and exposing the immediacy and collaborative potentiality of the drawing medium.
Drawing Quarters, exhibited in the IE Gallery at Emily Carr, features work by Roshanak Amini, Elizabeth Jacob, Wei Fan, Gabe Lung, Monica Blachnio, Melody Cooper, Siobhan Hyde, Madelaine Mongey, Kirsten Hatfield, Emily Ludington, Rebecca Erlichman, Tevis Bateman, Sara Bartisch, Kirsten Geekie, and Ji Yun Min. The exhibition is curated by Kristina Fiedrich.
