Emily Carr Students Deliver Furniture Design for Far Coast Coffee®
Emily Carr collaborated with the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Advanced Wood Processing (CAWP) and The Wood Co-op Gallery on an Olympic project for Far Coast Coffee®. Teams of students were asked to design and produce outdoor furniture (chairs and tables) manufactured from pine beetle wood to be used during the 2010 Winter Games. The furnishings will be placed at various prominent Far Coast venues (athletes’ village, conference centre, sporting venues, etc.) throughout Whistler and the Lower Mainland providing a comfortable oasis to those seeking a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of Olympic activities.
The project was facilitated by Blake Jarrett & Company and led by Emily Carr Associate Professor, Christian Blyt. A juried competition took place on April 8, 2009, and a team of fourth year students from Emily Carr were awarded first prize. Congratulations to Tina Kao, Luke Opacic, Nick Santillan and Sheila Tse who will now see their designs implemented and used during the 2010 Winter Games.
