May 8th. material mattersis seeking Research Assistants (RA’s) to work on Charred Wood: Multidisciplinary research creation exploring the stories and possibilities of charred wood Centered at Material Matters, Emily Carr University, Charred Wood is envisioned as a multidisciplinary project responding to climate change. The proposed research activities will generate insights about the implications of forest fires in the province and provide an opportunity to work with the residual material remaining on the land. Material Matters affiliated artists and designers working through research creation and design-led activities complementary to the expertise of scientists will reconsider charred wood. Material from trees and forest products will be central to research and making activities, exploring material and material production technology development and the production of 3-dimensional outcomes (discursive objects produced using charred wood for critical provocation, dialogue, ceremony, and everyday use) and 2-dimensional outcomes (the use of charcoal and wood for print-making, the use of charcoal in a range of mark-making mediums). RA’s will work within the Material Matters lab at ECU, in collaboration with our project partners: Forestry BC, UBC’s BPI (Bio Product Institute) and UBC’s CERC (Clean Energy Research Centre).
