Movers and Shapers 2008 at the Vancouver Museum is the culmination of two previous exhibitions in 2004 and 2007 respectively. Many of the designers featured in 2004 have gone on to international acclaim and are no longer considered emerging while most of the 2007 exhibitors are only beginning very influential design careers. Three design groups exhibiting at Movers and Shapers include ECI alumni:

Propellor designers, Pamela Goddard (98), Toby Barratt (96) and Nik Rust (96) create useful, beautiful and sustainable objects and experiences. They have created a multi- disciplinary studio that specializes in the custom design of lighting, furniture, exhibitions and spaces. A love of, and concern for, the natural world is at the core of the design practice, and is reflected in the forms, materials and processes used in Propellor’s creations. At the heart of good design is the combination of function, aesthetics and sustainability.

Vancouver designers Barnaby Killam (former student) and Stuart Sproule (01) started Red Flag Design in 2004 out of a desire to create products that offered more than just function or style. In reaction to a market saturated with disposable goods, which sacrifices design and quality for mass production, Red Flag Design draws inspiration from discarded materials; their opportunities lie in this waste. The material itself is the starting point for every design, and its physical and historical properties dictate the transformation into the finished product. The challenge of working with these unique materials is what drives the designers creatively.

Free Agency Creative a strategic brand development firm, where principal Tak Yukawa (02) works alongside partner, Don Williams (02 and Sessional Faculty), helping the fashion, lifestyle and real estate markets connect more deeply and relevantly with their consumers, which results in culture of brand loyalty. Their creative concept development and strategic implementation are built on two ideological pillars: first, that great creative solutions are the result of a diligent development process, and second, that specialized teams are the best way to meet the specific needs of the client.
