2009 Emily Carr graduates Callum Paterson and Nathan Gilliss received Best Animation Production for their film, Bonefeather at the 40th Canadian Student Film Festival (CSFF). The announcement was made September 2, 2009 as part of the World Film Festival of Montreal.

Bonefeather is a digitally-captured, stop-motion animated film collaboration featuring two male birds competing for the affection of a female bird through dance. Paterson describes the film as "the notion of awkward sexuality in the imaginary natural kingdom."

Through their win, Paterson and Gilliss join the tradition of animation excellence by Emily Carr graduates, including two-time Academy AwardTM nominee Wendy Tilby; David Burgess, Head of Character Animation, Dreamworks Animation; and Family Guy Retakes Director, Lindsey Pollard.

Two other Emily Carr alumni, also 2009 graduates, received special mention by the CSFF jury: animator Shannon Ang for Gophers in Space and filmmaker Jin Hong for Who Killed the Goldfish.

The jury was comprised of Line Richard, principal producer at the Quebec studio of the NFB: Roland Nguyen, short film department head at France 3 and Christina Stojanova, professor, film critic and writer.
