3DAN 205: Lighting and Rendering

This course focuses on lighting and rendering aesthetics and techniques for 3D computer animated production. Students come to understand the role that lighting and rendering play in creating a sense of space and building a palpable environment; establishing and changing a mood; and directing and guiding the eye. Class examples will outline key lighting concepts (e.g., lighting direction, intensity, quality, temperature) and examine different lighting approaches and aesthetics possible within the context of 3D computer imaging. Students will dissect and analyze lighting examples influenced by photography, painting, architecture, and other art forms. Studio work introduces students to key elements of lighting and rendering tools and provides them with advanced technical skills to create renderings of 3D scenes. Assignments include interior and exterior scenes, exploring both photorealistic and nonphotorealistic lighting and experimental rendering styles.
