FNDT 143: Aboriginal Painting + Drawing

Students will be introduced to the basics of Aboriginal artists' long traditions of drawing and painting art practices. The course introduces themes and traces traditions. It does not concentrate on a particular culture or style but rather explores form in terms of personal, cultural, social and historical contexts. Students will work on a series of assignments that reflect a hands on approach to drawing and painting starting with basic principles of drawing and line forms, the introduction of colour, personal image development and how artists give their ideas form. They will learn to contextualize traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art forms and practices within the larger discourse of contemporary painting.
