NMSA 200 F001: New Media + Sound Arts Core I
This course is an introduction to working with time-based media and sound practices, focusing on the use of video and sound to explore relationships with place. Topics include field listening and recording, basic electronics, sound synthesis, soundscape composition, performance, and video installation. The course includes technical workshops, group activities, discussions, and both collaborative and individual projects. Readings and examples of artists and artworks provide critical context for students' thinking and making. Assignments include techniques to enhance listening and observation skills, and generative methods that lead to experimental and open-ended projects. The course fosters an ability to think critically about making media and sound art in relation to the places we inhabit.

Julie Andreyev is an artist, reasearcher and Associate Professor at Emily Carr University of Art + Design where she teaches in the New Media + Sound Arts major, Critical Studies and Foundation courses. Her artwork has been shown locally, nationally and internationally, and she has published essays in academic journals, books, catalogues and magazines.
She enjoys walking with her canine collaborators, Tom and Sugi, paying attention to the liveliness of the local animals, trees and plants, and Earth forces. She is currently working on creative co-productions with birds, including the crow family whose territory includes her home (Bird Park), and investigating the creation of immersive media depicting experiences within old-growth forest ecologies (Wild Empathy).
