SCLP 315: Socially Engaged Sculpture

This studio course examines the multiple ways of approaching and understanding the social capacity of sculpture. Students will study some of the most significant work produced by socially engaged artists and learn how sculpture materials, objects, and processes can be performative and informative tools for examining and producing social relations. With an emphasis on collaboration, participation, and dialogue, students will develop critical and ethical approaches to producing socially engaged sculpture. Through assigned and self-directed actions, interventions, collective exercises, and studio projects, students will learn to address both local and global issues facing socially engaged sculptors and learn to work contextually in a variety of social and public spaces.

Priority is given to CRCP and VIAR students in Years 3 and 4. Students outside of the registration priority group may register/waitlist for this course as of the registration rule release date.
