SCLP 316: Hand/Digital: Hybrid Practices

Digital applications are increasingly used in the production of models and sculptural forms in contemporary sculpture practice. This course will introduce students to the digital technologies currently used by artists while examining the new directions that emerge with these tools. Students will have an opportunity to investigate formal, conceptual and technical issues specific to sculpture. Students will be introduced to 3D related technologies which may include use of the CNC, 3D printers, and laser cutters in combination with materials such as wood, metal, clay, plastics, textiles, or flexible materials, as well as methods such as casting, assembling, and constructing. Assigned and self-directed projects, research, presentations, discussions and critiques are an integral part of the course.
