SOCS 312: Cultural Production + the Law

This course provides the opportunity to study the relationship of Cultural Production and the Law within a social science context. Through a study of issues related to appropriation, copyright, moral rights, digital/electronic rights, creative commons licenses and related open source uses of artists' materials, students will gain a better understanding of contemporary social and cultural theories as well as the legal, social and ethical implications of making in an art and design context. Lectures, selected readings and assignments will give particular attention to critical and theoretical positions significant to an understanding of cultural production and the law discourse and the larger issues it generates for the practitioner.
