Continuing Studies is dedicated to non-degree programming and lifelong learning, and has been serving a diverse range of students in this capacity since 1997. In the past 12 years, up to 4,000 students have registered each year, and as programming expands, more students are discovering Continuing Studies every day. The department's excellent instructors have earned a solid reputation and a loyal following of students, who return time and again for new inspiration. From beginner to professional, students at all levels are developing skills to advance their careers and pursue new directions in their creative endeavors.

Today Continuing Studies offers three part-time certificate programs in Fine Art Techniques, 2D Design Basics and 3D Design Basics. Design Essentials, a one-year, full-time course of study, is offered in partnership with BCIT. In the past six years, nearly 400 students have graduated from Design Essentials equipped with the skills to enter the creative workforce in a variety of design-related jobs.

This summer, Continuing Studies hosts the Summer Institute for Teens, a four-week intensive program for high school students with a serious interest in art and design. With students enrolled in six different specializations, from Digital Photography to Industrial Design to Aboriginal Arts, the Institute brings energetic and talented young artists together with experienced educators in a challenging environment. The Institute concludes with an exhibit of the students' work in the Concourse Gallery, July 31. The public is invited to join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these artists, the youngest members of the Emily Carr community.

In August, Continuing Studies brings two exciting fibre arts events to Emily Carr: the exhibition Fibre, Naturally: Paper Like You Have Never Seen it Before, a co-presentation with the Craft Association of BC, and the Master Fibre Arts Workshop, a three-day exploration of advanced fibre and textile techniques.

Looking to the fall, Continuing Studies will offer an innovative and diverse array of new courses, including Environmental Installations, Design for Exhibits, and the Graphic Memoir: An Introduction. Due to increasingly high demand, Continuing Studies will be presenting one of the largest selections of painting courses on record, including many returning favourites! With registration for the fall term beginning August 6, 2009, Emily Carr looks forward to welcoming new and returning students ready to find their creative inspiration in Continuing Studies.
