The independent study period occurs midway through the degree program, providing an opportunity for students to focus on specific self-directed professional development efforts in parallel with their ongoing graduate research. Successful professional development efforts can range from specific placements within partner institutions and organizations, to more personalized learning outcomes in support of the Master Thesis Project. Proposals for the independent study period are customized and developed during the Spring semester of first year in consultation with faculty, supervisors, program administration, and must be approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies. Students must be aware of the requirements of the Research Ethics Board as they develop their proposals.
