Over 65 high school students have already decided to spend the first month of their summer vacation in class at Emily Carr University. The Summer Institute for Teens had 112 students (out of 120 spots) last July, so being half-full at the end of early bird registration was an unexpected surprise.

“It’s fantastic to see this phenomenal growth, because it represents a belief and investment in the next generation of artists and designers,” says Claire Schagerl ('04), who runs the Emily Carr University teen programs. “Our summer students show that creatives of all ages can be invested in their practice.”

Call for Applications | THE LEEWAY STUDIO RESIDENCY Summer Term: May – August (Application Deadline: March 31, 2015)

Emily Carr Continuing Studies invites visual artists and designers* to submit applications for a four month Studio Residency in the Leeway.

The Leeway is a multi-disciplinary resourced studio space for artists and designers. It is a shared, open studio space suitable for those who are seeking to forge a sense of community while cultivating their creative practice and exploring new techniques and processes. Artists and designers in The Leeway work alongside other makers and learn from experienced technicians and instructors through demonstrations and workshops.

Continuing Studies instructor and studio technician, Shinsuke Minegishi's ('98) print work will be presented at Art Toronto, the Open Studio Print Sales Gallery. Curated by Astrid Ho, Print Sales Manager and Archivist, this exhibition features original prints by Canadian artists, reflecting the national scope of this contemporary printmaking centre.

Sessional faculty member Vjeko Sager is the featured artist for this year's Your Kontinent: Film and Media Arts Festival.

In exploration of the connections between human, art and technology, Sager will build a diviNation Tower in Minoru Plaza as the centrepiece of the festival.

James Lindfield Memorial

It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of James Lindfield on June 21st, from pneumonia. James will be remembered as a devoted father, passionate teacher, committed artist, and as a perceptive and loving husband, brother, uncle and friend.

We are stunned to have lost such a valuable member of our community, and our thoughts and best wishes are with his wife Sheila and son Jacob during this tragic time.

This summer, Continuing Studies is busting out of the city and exploring programming in Penticton, Prince George and the Resort Community of Whistler. And as with each new semester, we are continuing to offer new courses, workshops and special events including:

Drawing From Almost Life is a new course held at the Beatty Biodiversity Museum of UBC that takes advantage of the natural history collection found there.

Block Transfer Credits Now Offered For Design Essentials Graduates

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is pleased to announce that graduates of the joint Emily Carr Continuing Studies/BCIT Design Essentials Program have the opportunity to receive a block transfer of 33 credits to complete a Bachelor of Design degree in Communication Design at Emily Carr.

Design Essentials graduates will need to formally apply to Emily Carr University with an application by January 15, 2014, and portfolio by February 1, 2014.

Design Essentials graduates accepted into Emily Carr University will receive: 33 credits = 18 credits for Foundation Year + 15 credits for second year design>

Now in its’ third year! This one-day celebration of the local comic culture presents artists, writers and comic book creators showcasing their comics, zines and artwork. Live panel discussions, artist demos and a participatory Comix Jam invite all comic enthusiasts to take part! Admission is free.
