Alumna Nadia Myre Named to 2014 Sobey Shortlist

Emily Car University is proud to announce that Nadia Myre has been named to the Sobey Shortlist. A multi-disciplinary artist of Algonquin heritage, Nadia graduated from the University in 1997; she received her  MFA from Concordia in 2002.

Shinsuke Minegishi ('98) exhibits his printwork Resurrection at Striped House Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, from June 18 to 29, 2014. An opening reception will take place on June 20 at 5pm. Shinsuke's mother, Ryoko Minegishi, will hold a poem reading performance in the gallery on June 21 and 28, 2014, at 6:30pm.

Etienne Zack Receives 2014 Emily Award

Internationally acclaimed visual artist Etienne Zack graduated from the painting program in 2000. His work uses fictitious possibilities and historical moments that are staged into paintings reminiscent of fabricated environments.

The annual Emily Award program is a celebration of the outstanding achievements of a member of the University alumni whose endeavours in the arts, media and design fields have brought honour to the University.

A recipient of the prestigious RBC Painting Competition (2005), Etienne received the 2008 City of Montreal's Pierre-Ayot prize, and had his inaugural solo exhibition at Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal, Canada in 2010.

The prestigious $25,000 Joseph Plaskett Award for 2014 will be awarded in Vancouver to Collin Johanson (‘04). Johanson will be presented the eleventh Joseph Plaskett Award at a reception taking place at Equinox Gallery (beside the site of the future Emily Carr Campus) from 6:30-9pm on Friday, May 9, 2014.

Polychrome Fine Art is presenting the second solo show of Canadian artist Ingrid Mary Percy ('95).

Colourful, abstract, painted wood and paper surfaces are dissected and sliced into micro-stripes and reconstituted into cropped and ordered, hard-edge two dimensional and sculptural emblems. Pushed together to live with each other, the painterly bands are coerced into visual interplay that are charming and lush as well as awkward and discordant: characteristics that are allegorical of most beautiful relationships.

The Continued Importance of Feminist Dialogue is a speaker series and panel discussion, moderated by Kristina Fiedrich (MAA '12), focusing on the representation and experience of women in contemporary culture, business and the creative industry in Vancouver. The Speaker Series takes place on Wednesday, May 7 from 7 - 9:30pm at The Incubator.

Speakers include Christine D’Onofrio, Kim Ridgewell, Pennylane Shen, Jessica Yeandle-Hignell, Tarah Hogue and Janet McDonald.

When Germaine Koh and Ian Verchere approached Emily Carr to establish an award in recognition of creative and athletic achievement, our reaction was gratitude, followed quickly by confusion. What did athletics have to do with creativity and Emily Carr students?
