Field Contemporary is presenting Deirdre McAdams ('08) and Vanessa Brown ('13) together in its inaugural exhibition Outside A Marble Palace. New works by both artists will be exhibited, highlighting McAdams’ paintings and Brown’s sculptures.

An opening reception takes place on April 24, 2014, from 7 to 9pm. The exhibition runs from April 25 through May 24, 2014.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong (’11) will present her solo exhibition, Between Reality and Transcendence, at Articule in Montreal from April 25 to June 1, 2014.

Created in 2002 by the Sobey Art Foundation, the Sobey Art Award is Canada's preeminent award for contemporary Canadian art. The annual $50,000 prize is given to an artist under 40 who has exhibited in a public or commercial art gallery within 18 months of being nominated. 

The 2014 Curatorial Panel has announced the 25 artists vying for this year's prize, and they include the following Emily Carr alumni and faculty:

With her new work, The Anonymous Project, Emily Carr alumna, Krista Bailie ('10) is hoping to answer the question "Could we create more meaningful connections if we were stripped of the ability to hide behind the identities we’ve constructed for ourselves?"

By asking participants to sign up anonymously and then communicate via email with their artist-chosen partners, Bailie hopes to see if deeper communication can take place. The project has already been well received globally, with participants from Peru, Japan, Europe, the UK, Australia and all over North America.

Noted photographer and Emily Carr Honourary Doctorate recipient Fred Herzog has been honoured with the Audain Prize for the Visual Arts for lifetime achievement. Awarded annually by the Audain Foundation, the award is worth $30,000.

Fred Herzog has been active in Vancouver's art scene for more than forty years. Born in Germany, he came to Vancouver in 1953. Since that time, he has produced a substantial body of photographs, taking urban life in Vancouver -second-hand shops, vacant lots, neon signage and the crowds of people who have populated the city's streets over the past fifty years-as his primary subject.

What do internationally acclaimed artists Douglas Coupland ('84), Geoffrey Farmer ('92), Graham Gillmore ('85) and former professor Ian Wallace (1972-1998) all have in common? They are all past students from West Vancouver public schools - School District 45. An exhibition featuring their work, as well as nine other SD45 "alumni", alongside current kindergarten to grade 12 students, opens April 8th at the West Vancouver Museum.

Sessional Faculty member, Barb Choit's ('00) first solo exhibition in Toronto, with Cooper Cole Gallery, takes place from April 10 to May 10, 2014.

Originals, Copies, and Fades is a continuation of the artist's series, Fade Diary, in which Choit photographs fading advertising images repeated within an urban context.

Embrace Vancouver is a collective of artists, designers and community members who have come together to create an epic art piece for Burning Man.

Albert Law ('10) will have his work published in the Applied Arts Photography Annual again this year. His winning entry for 2014 features his continued photography work with the Canadian Army.

Gallery 295 is pleased to present new work by Elizabeth Zvonar ('01) .

Elizabeth Zvonar combines new collage work with photographs she has been taking that resemble constructed collage yet are genuine images taken with a camera. The collage images layer contemporary fashion spreads with nebulae implying the body is one in a vast sea of stars. The photographs interspersed throughout the exhibition ground and confuse the constructed images through the improbable reflections and refractions of colour, light and nature within our built world, abstracting how we understand what we’re seeing.
