The Lab presents Alternorthern featuring work by Sonny Assu (02), Valerie Boxer, Vincent Chevalier, Brendan Fernandes, Jenny Gag, Michael Love (03), Jon Saski, Until We Have a Helicopter [Wes Cameron (04) and Matthew Robertson (05)] and Zoe Yuristy, curated by Kevin Betram and Jason Gowans.  Canada is a country whose national narrative is difficult to define, even for Canadians. This question is further complicated when looking at emerging artists who have grown up under intense globalization.

Wendy Niamath (01) was commissioned by Wall Financial to produce the Green Collection for the Westin Wall Centre Vancouver Airport Hotel. Her photographs can be seen in the guest rooms, hallways, boardrooms, elevators and lobby of the hotel.

T&T: False Creek, an exhibition created by Tyler Brett (01) and Tony Romano (01), is appearing at the Pendulum Gallery during the 2010 Winter Olympics. Consisting of sculptural assemblages, panoramic print and a children’s colouring centre, the exhibition transforms the public atrium of the HSBC Building into an optimistic post-apocalyptic environment.

Etienne Zack (00) will hold his first solo museum exhibition at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal. The exhibit comprises of twenty-two paintings produced over the last six years, including two major new works – Formalities and Proceeding to Irrevocability, 2009 – created specifically for the show.

Myungsook Lee (08) has recently lauched a new Canadian multicultural awareness photo magazine. DIVERSE has a strong focus on art, culture and heritage with each quarterly issue offering stories on artists and art reviews, cultural complexity and identity. Various ethnic groups are highlighted to show their distinct cultural heritages, both historical and social.

Pierre Leichner (07) presents From Transcendence to ‘Altercendence’ at the MediaModes conference at the New York School of Visual Arts.

Leichner will explore the biological, psychological, cultural and spiritual facets of transcendence. Especially the renewed symbiotic relationship between the sciences and the art, the convergence of digital media and the emergence of global communication networks, we are at the verge of art that will create a change, an altercendent state.

Elizabeth Zvonar | On Time + Face Up

Emily Carr University of Art + Design alumna Elizabeth Zvonar (01) exhibits at the Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG), Vancouver.

On Time includes an array of sculptures and collage that act as possible portals into implausible places. The inspiration of the exhibition stems from Zvonar's current interest in the connections between Cubism, representations of the 4th Dimension and rubber bands as metaphors for time.
