Callum Paterson + Nathan Gilliss receive Best Animation Production Award

2009 Emily Carr graduates Callum Paterson and Nathan Gilliss received Best Animation Production for their film, Bonefeather at the 40th Canadian Student Film Festival (CSFF). The announcement was made September 2, 2009 as part of the World Film Festival of Montreal.

Bonefeather is a digitally-captured, stop-motion animated film collaboration featuring two male birds competing for the affection of a female bird through dance. Paterson describes the film as "the notion of awkward sexuality in the imaginary natural kingdom."

And laid him on the green presents a selection of work from Vancouver artists Mark Dahl, Tegan Moore (08), and Lauren Scott (06), examining the manner in which specific objects and scenarios can be made uncertain through vaguely scientific methods and purposefully poetic choices.

The exhibit is curated by Francesca Bennett (08).

As part of SWARM 09, Daniel Oates-Kuhn (07) has applied to 221A Artist Run Centre for permission to construct an artwork installation containing three (3) to five (5) units, with approximately 600 square feet of exhibition area. Access to the site will occur at its opening.

David Khang (00, current sessional faculty) and P. Roch Smith (97) take part in a group exhibition Welcome to the Dollhouse that features miniature artworks that consider the small things in life, as invited by TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary. The artists come together in the dollhouse to explore various intersections of collecting and play; memory, loss, and the desire to preserve; manipulation and control.

The Millennium Plate Project was created by Danny Kostyshin (76) during the six months of the changeover of the millennium, and into the first year of the new century. It is a concept with which to approach the embellishment of a series of 30 handmade, wall-hangable porcelain bowls. The Millennium Plate Project also contains the contributions of some participating artists, local and international.

Queer references... selected porcelain plates from The Millennium Plate Project, was done to celebrate Gay Pride in Vancouver.

Prêt-à-Porter features the works of Katherine Soucie (09) and Amber Churchill. Turning hosiery into clothes is a specialty of Katherine Soucie, an emerging Canadian clothing and textile designer from Vancouver. Creating unique and bold pieces that make women feel confident and beautiful is the goal for Amber Churchill, a jeweller who beaded her way west from Ontario. This two person show combines similar aesthetics and design philosophies, in addition to a high regard for good craftsmanship.

The event will take place Friday, November 13th, 2009 - its aim is to bring together alumni from Emily Carr University of Art + Design and its  predecessor institutions as part of its mandate to reconnect with alumni outside of British Columbia, and to encourage alumni to connect with each other.

Project Rainbow are Jesse Birch (01), Jade Boyd, Sydney Vermont (00), and Heidi Nutley, a group of Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artists who collaborate to explore the study of colour through photography, film, video, and movement. Their projects are research based and often derive from literature, dance, film, and art history and have included diverse sources such as Honoré de Balzac, Maya Deren, and Yvonne Rainer.
