Each year, our campus is transformed as the works of more than 300 Design, Media and Visual Arts graduates are unveiled to the public – and students with the highest creative and academic achievement are rewarded through The Show 2014 Awards. Many of these works will also be exhibited at a special Emily Carr Award Winners exhibition at Winsor Gallery later this summer.

Hovering – as our culture now seems to be – on the brink of abandoning so many paradigms of knowledge and, along with them, assumptions about what it means to succeed, the notion of failure itself is proving to be an increasingly evocative site of investigation for artists.

Break the Legs Of What I Want To Happen is a collaborative curatorial project developed and realized at Access Gallery by the students of Emily Carr University’s AHIS 401 Topics in Curatorial Projects seminar under the instruction of Access Director/Curator Kimberly Phillips.

In 1981, Kate Bush and David Bowie rented a secluded mansion in a remote part of England to work on an album together. Over the course of one month, these two iconic figures lived and worked together, away from the limelight and pressures of their lives. Little is known of what became of this collaboration. Neither of them has ever spoken publicly about what happened during this time. Any recordings they made have never been heard.

Ian Verchere and Germaine Koh challenge our preconceptions by establishing a student award celebrating the symbiotic relationship between creativity and athleticism.

When Germaine Koh and Ian Verchere approached Emily Carr to establish an award in recognition of creative and athletic achievement, our reaction was gratitude, followed quickly by confusion. What did athletics have to do with creativity and Emily Carr students?

Fourth year student, Bitu Chakma, is holding a solo exhibition at the Moat Gallery located within the Vancouver Public Library, Central Branch until April 29, 2014.

"Bizu is the most important socio-spiritual festival of the Chakma.  This festival gave birth to the Bizu dance, with the festival lasting for three days and begins on the last day of the month of Chaitra.The first day is known as Phool Bizu. On this day, household items, including clothes, are cleaned and washed, as well,  food items are collected and the house is given a new look with different flowers acting as a veil.

Five new projects, ranging from banners and posters to videos and a mural, have joined Vancouver’s public art collection in an exhibition to honour and celebrate the City’s Year of Reconciliation.

The City’s Public Art Program commissioned 10 new artist projects overall with the first five debuting in March 2014 and new projects being introduced monthly through August 2014.

Vancouver General Hospital, like all hospitals, is a place you might not consider visiting unless you are acutely ill and then it is the very place you want to be. Known for outstanding medicine, VGH also boasts a significant art collection that speaks to the strong link between art and healing. The collection of over 1000 pieces contains works by Gordon Smith (’46), Gathie Falk, Martha Sturdy (’78), Jack Shadbolt (former faculty member), Scott McFarland, Stephen Waddell, Christos Dikeakos, Jock Macdonald (founding faculty member) and many other established and emerging artists.

Fourth year FVIM student, Lawrence Le Lam, whose first feature documentary Not Business As Usual will be screening at the Vancouver International Film Festival Forum on April 8, 2014, at 6:30pm in the Vancity Theatre.

This documentary, directed by Lawrence Le Lam, written by Rik Kingle-Watt and produced by Institute B, tracks the changing landscape of business with the rising tide of conscious capitalism through the stories of local entrepreneurs who have found innovative ways to bring humanity back into business.

This screening will be followed by a panel discussion including: Joel Bakan (writer of The Corporation), W. Brett Wilson (Dragon's Den), Mark Brand (Save-On Meats), and Sandra Odendahl (RBC Director of Sustainability).

Congratulations to third year student Christian Huizenga whose piece, Bench Way, was selected as the winner of the First Capital Realty Sculpture Contest. Christian will work with representatives from First Capital Realty, Emily Carr, engineers and fabricators over the summer to complete the project (see maquette) which will be located at Harbour Front Centre in North Vancouver.

The jury wishes to thank all of the students for their proposals, in particular the short-listed students whose maquettes reflected both their creativity and earnestness.
