Soon-to-be fourth year student Braden Scheck’s latest film creation has made its way to Hollywood. But it’s not the kind of film you might expect.

On Friday, April 24, 2015, Emily Carr University special guests broke ground at a ceremony to marking the launch of construction for our new campus.

As part of the celebration, four Emily Carr undergraduate communication design students created and designed the seven shovels to mark this historic event.  

The seven shovels were created to represent seven distinct areas within Emily Carr’s community.

1. Foundation Year – triangle motif symbolizes a pyramid, upward movement and focus, the journey students travel while pursuing their undergraduate degrees

2. Faculty of Culture + Community – the circles represent the group, and the connection we all share with one another, which forms the fabric of culture

The James Black Gallery presents current students and alumni in an exhibition, ANTICS, taking place on May 2, 2015, at 8pm.

The gallery is artist-run, which allows artists-in-residence the opportunity to show their work, curate and run the space. ANTICS will feature projects of emerging local artists in a variety of formats including media, installation, and painting. This show is the last of a set of three opening shows for the gallery.

ANTICS | noun: A grotesque, fantastic, or ridiculous presentation.

Quantum Entanglements/VAST class exhibit at Science World is an exhibition of selected works from a Visual Arts Studio course taught by Associate Professor Ingrid Koenig and co-organized with TRIUMF (Canada’s National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics).

Second year MDes candidate Caylee Raber (BDes '10) has been named one of the Top 25 finalists of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council's 2015 Storytellers Challenge.

We are happy to celebrate the successful installation of a "Harmonograph Swingset" at this year's TED conference, hosted in Vancouver. A sculpture by Carly Stadelmann and Emily Carr University employee Jeremy Wong literally made waves inviting thousands of global visitors at TED to create interactive art pieces.

TED, car2go and Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s Faculty of Culture + Community have partnered together to showcase the next league of rising art and design stars with a collaborative vehicle wrap project.

In late February, the University issued and open call to students, resulting in over 40 outstanding submissions. The jury, comprised of  representatives from car2go, TED and Emily Carr, were then challenged with narrowing down the selection to just seven designs.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Establishments, institutions, public areas, domestic spaces, even ephemeral situations carry with them protocols with which we are asked to comply as we encounter, enter, or pass through them. Our contemporary understanding of “protocol” is as “an official procedure or system of rules governing affairs or behaviours.” However, early definitions of the term—a provisional draft, a working manuscript—imply its opposite.

We invite submissions of recent or proposed work from students active in any and all media, to be considered for inclusion in an exhibition project investigating this expanded space of protocol, collaboratively curated by the students of Emily Carr University’s AHIS 401 Topics in Curatorial Projects.

Trevor Van den Eijnden’s current work investigates the Anthropocene, our current global geological era born of the Industrial Revolution. These visual inquiries focus on the constructs of space versus place, where the former is a one-dimensional physical location and the latter is the overlapping subjective terrain.
