Join Fillip and Emily Carr University on Thursday, July 19, for a performance by the Vancouver Women’s Ambient Music Collective (VWAM).

For their performance at the Emily Carr University Library, VWAM will structure their musical improvisation around VWAM founding member Alice Hamilton’s chomesthesia or “colour-hearing”—a synesthetic experience in which a person “sees” colours with the ear as part of a total musical experience. Caroline Sophia, Cole Alexandra, and Courtenay Webber will join Hamilton, creating sounds with a variety of analog and digital synths, laptops, and iPad soft synths accompanied by ambient video projection.

Entrance is free, but space is limited and an RSVP is required.

About the Presenters

The Vancouver Women’s Ambient Music collective was formed in 2018 by Alice Hamilton out of her 400-square-foot apartment in the Belvedere Court, Vancouver. In response to an aggressive renoviction strategy launched by the landlord in 2015, Belvedere residents have come together in an effort to save their homes. The building's population includes many artists and much of the tenants's activism has centered around creative endeavour. VWAM began as part of this effort, operating from a belief that everyone is musical and that musical practice is an essential part of human experience. VWAM seeks to remedy the gender imbalance in music, providing an inclusive environment open to all persons who identify as allies of women.
