Jeremy Shaw Wins $50,000 Sobey Art Award

Jeremy Shaw (BFA '00) was announced as the winner of the 2016 Sobey Art Award at a gala event on November 1, 2016, at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. 

The Sobey Art Award is the pre-eminent prize for Canadian artists 40 and under. Presented annually, the award celebrates some of our country's most exciting young artists and provides significant financial recognition. The winner receives $50,000 and each of the four finalists receive $10,000.

Resonant Things: Sound and Objecthood on Canada's West Coast

Most people associate art galleries with looking, but this is by far not the only experience. Artists also create exhibitions with sound to make for museum and gallery visits that shift our experiences of what we are viewing. The Surrey Art Gallery will explore the sound of art and objects on Saturday, November 19, 2016, with Jay Bundy Johnson ('93), Lee Hutzulak, , Brady Marks, and DB Boyko for Resonant Things: Sound and Objecthood on Canada’s West Coast.

Alumnus + Print Media Studio Tech Shinsuke Minegishi ('98) is holding a solo exhibition at Striped House Gallery in Tokyo from June 18 to 29, 2016. An opening reception will take place on June 18 from 4:30 to 6:30pm.

A poem reading performance by Ryoko Minegishi will take place on June 25 from 7 to 8pm.

Recent graduate student M.E. Sparks (MAA 2016) is the recipient of the Nancy Petry Award. The $10,000 award will be announced on May 14 at the Equinox Gallery.

Alumnae featured in Puddle Popper at Dynamo Arts Association

Sarah Davidson ('15), Juli Majer ('15), Sonja Ratkay ('15) and Melanie Thibodeau ('14) are featured in an exhibition Puddle Popper at Dynamo Arts Association.

Through a close and constant drawing practice, each of these artists have an interest in translating immediate markings into the physical world. Puddle Popper is the coming together of a collection of objects created by the artists and arranged collaboratively.

Shinsuke Minegishi Solo Exhibition at Open Studio in Toronto

Shinsuke Minegishi is holding a solo exhibition Shinsuke Minegishi: Fragility to Resurrection at Open Studio Print Sales Gallery in Toronto. The show runs from March 18 to April 23, 2016.

If you are in Toronto, an opening reception will take place on Friday, March 18 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. You can meet the artist on Saturday, April 2 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Alumna Kristina Fiedrich (MAA '12) is the recipient of Gallery 295's 2016 Emerging Curator Exhibition. Her exhibition Spectral Transmissions features the works of Annie Briard (MAA '13 and sessional faculty), Deborah Edmeades, and Emiliano Sepulveda.

Filmmaker Kevin Eastwood's ('99) latest documentary, The Death Debate, premiered February 26 on Telus Optik Local, and is now available online to the public. The film tells the story of the people behind the landmark 2015 Supreme Court of Canada case on physician assisted-dying.
