First Year Foundation Academic Requirements

The minimum academic requirement is graduation from Grade 12 secondary school, with five grade 12 subjects, including English 12 with a minimum grade of 'C', two other grade 12 academic courses and two grade 12 elective courses.  The minimum overall grade point average required for admission is 2.5 or C+ or 67%.  All elective courses must be grade 12 and can be Ministry Approved, Board Approved or Locally Developed.

Applicants from British Columbia and Yukon

Grade 12 required academic courses;

  • English 12 or First Peoples English 12 (a minimum grade of 60% or 'C' is required)
  • Two other grade 12 academic courses chosen from: English Literature 12, History 12, Other Language 12, Comparative Civilizations 12, Geography 12, Geology 12, BC First Nations Studies 12, Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Principles of Mathematics 12, Pre-Calculus 12, Calculus 12, Physics 12, American Sign Language 12, Conservatory Canada 12, Royal Conservatory Music 12. Psychology 12, Law 12, Writing 12 (Creative, Journalism or Media), Marketing 12, Accounting 12, Applications of Mathematics 12, Communications 12 and Technical and Professional Communications 12.

Current grade 12 students must provide the Admissions Office with an interim transcript indicating all grade 11 courses completed and grade 12 courses completed or in progress. The Academic Basis of Admission will be determined using the courses reported on this transcript. All interim transcripts must be submitted to the University by January 15.  All high school courses must be completed by the end of June, students planning to take summer school courses are not eligible to apply until the following year.  Final transcripts indicating successful completion of the high school diploma and successful completion of required courses must be sent to the University by August 1.

Applicants from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, Northwest Territories and Nunavut
Grade 12 graduation with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (C+) calculated on five grade 12 courses that are equivalent to the applicants from British Columbia and Yukon requirements, including senior level English with a minimum grade of C.

Applicants from Ontario
Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (C+) calculated on five grade 12 U/M courses including English (ENG4U) with a minimum grade of C plus two other academic courses.

Applicants from Quebec
CEGEP If you are applying after one year of CEGEP, you must have at least one full-time year of study in an academic diploma program with a minimum of two English Literature courses.

If you are applying after two years of CEGEP, you must have completed a two-year academic diploma program with a minimum of two English Literature courses.  First year transfer credit will be considered for students completing the two year CEGEP diploma.

Quebec students who only complete courses in preparatory English or English as a Second Language will be required to write an English Language Proficiency exam for admission.


Home Schooled Applicants

Grade 12 graduation with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (C+) calculated on five grade 12 courses that are equivalent to the applicants from British Columbia and Yukon requirements, including senior level English with a minimum grade of C.

Non Matriculated Adult Applicants

A non matriculated applicant is an adult who does not meet the normal high school diploma requirements for admission. Emily Carr University reserves the right to determine whether or not an applicant can apply under this category. Non matriculated applicant status is restricted to residents of Canada who are 21 years of age or older. This determination is not made on the sole criterion of age and applicants will be required to present a satisfactory grade of ‘C’ or higher in a senior level English literature course. It is strongly recommended that applicants who have not completed their high school diploma enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses and complete the British Columbia Adult Graduation Diploma (BCAGD). Aboriginal Admissions Policy

Emily Carr University is dedicated to providing access and support for all applicants and particularly underrepresented populations. The University will consider aboriginal applicants who are 19 years of age or older and who do not meet the current academic standing required for admission to Foundation or on transfer. Applicants who qualify under this category will be considered on the basis of their educational background, cultural knowledge, work experience, academic goals, personal achievements and current artistic portfolio.

Applicants must submit the following:

  • Apply online by filing an application through the Post Secondary Application Service at ApplyBC https://applybc.ca. A $50 non-refundable application fee is required and must be paid with a credit card.
  • Upload and submit portfolio at SlideRoom
  • Send official transcripts
  • Submit two letters of reference from persons able to assess the applicants potential for success
  • Submit an applicant statement outlining his/her academic and artistic objectives

Applications will be reviewed by the Aboriginal Admissions Committee. The Committee has the authority to select students for admission and also determine if special conditions are necessary. Such conditions can include but are not limited to: course load requirement, tutor support, english upgrading, peer mentoring.

Applicants from Countries Outside Canada
Completion of the highest level of secondary schooling that is available in their home country in a program leading to university entrance.

IB Diploma Applicants

The admission average for an IB Diploma applicant is generally calculated on 3 Higher Level and 3 Standard Level subjects. A minimum requirement of 24 points is recommended to be considered for admission.

First year university transfer credit will be awarded to students who achieve a grade of at least 5 or higher in Higher Level courses in courses that are approved as equivalent to Emily Carr University required courses.

AP Applicants

Emily Carr University recognizes the value of AP courses.  First year university transfer credit will be awarded to students who achieve a grade of 4 or higher in courses that are approved as equivalent to Emily Carr University required courses.

British Pattern Curriculum

Standing of C in five subject areas, including English, with at least two subjects at the A Level (or four at the Advanced Subsidiary Level). First year university transfer credit may be awarded for some A Level subjects.

Cambridge Pre-U

Completed diploma with GPR plus three Principal Subjects; Literature in English (mandatory), Art & Design (recommended) and Art History (recommended).  Admission average Pass 1 or higher.

Latin America

Bachillerato or university entrance exams with very good/excellent results.

Transfer Applicants and Transfer Credit for Foundation
Applicants applying to Foundation from another post secondary institution must have an overall grade point average of 2.0 (C or 60%). Applicants who have completed appropriate academic and fine art studio courses at an accredited post-secondary art institute, university, university college, or community college, will be assessed for applicable transfer credit for the Foundation year. When students move into second year further transfer credit if applicable will be assessed for the remainder of the degree.

Continuation to Year 2 following the Foundation year
All applicants are advised that admission to the Foundation year does not guarantee future admission to programs in Animation, Film, Photography or Design. Students wishing to enter these limited enrollment programs must compete for admission at the end of the Foundation year. Students who successfully pass the Foundation year are guaranteed placement in the Visual Arts major.
