Community Enhancement Fund

Emily Carr University is supporting BIPOC student leadership and community engagement through the Community Enhancement Fund.

This fund supports student-led creative work and research activities involving social and institutional change and equity advocacy, taking place during the Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 terms. Four awards of $2,500 are available. Applications are open until December 4, 2020.

Recipients are encouraged to address issues of inequity that not only permeate our society but are also reproduced within ECU, locally in B.C and Vancouver, or are impacting the world at large. These funds amplify student-led collaboration and advocacy communities in an effort to strengthen political power, participation and multi-racial solidarity.

What projects and initiatives can be funded?

Eligible activities for the Community Enhancement Fund include:

    • Costs affiliated with collaborative programming such as student-organized lectures, workshops, screenings, etc.
    • Materials for creative work and cultural production, openly defined.
    • Costs to create and cultivate BIPOC student affinity spaces
    • Professional development and workshop fees affiliated with anti-racist and social justice work
    • Costs affiliated with mutual aid, community organizing, radical education and advocacy work
    • Costs needed to offset equipment and technology costs.
    • Fees for community partners
    • Travel costs (pending COVID-19 restrictions)

    Who can apply?

    • Undergraduate and graduate ECU students and 2020 alumni.
    • These funds are reserved for individuals who self-identify as BIPOC. For the purposes of these awards, the term BIPOC is intended to encompass a variety of diasporic and racialized identities. Any current undergraduate, graduate student, or recent 2020 alumni who identifies as Black, Indigenous or a Person of Colour is invited to apply.
    • Individual students are eligible to apply; collaborations between students are recommended.
    • Student clubs and student-led organizations are also eligible.

    Evaluation + Criteria

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of BIPOC students, faculty, and staff who will evaluate them on three criteria:

    1. Feasibility of project: Can the applicant(s) successfully complete the projected scope of work within the timeframe? How is the funding being utilized?
    2. Outreach and community building: How will the application inspire participation from historically underrepresented groups within the ECU community? Does this application create an opportunity to collaborate with groups or partners outside the community?
    3. Impact: How can this project enhance a culture of equity and inclusion? Can this activity seed other efforts? Is there potential for growth beyond the scope of the project?
