Terms and Conditions: Art and Engagement in Public

What business does art have getting involved in the wider world? This question continually underwrites countless socially-engaged art projects that create encounters with a range of publics, and yet it remains particularly sticky.

Art projects that take the form of temporary interventions, community-engaged events, or even experimental institutions are shaped by and for the public. In this dynamic, socially-engaged art allows new questions to be asked of existing lived circumstances and it generates unsuspecting challenges through creative interrogations and dialogical processes. This talk by ECU faculty member Justin Langlois will present a range of approaches to making art with, though, and in the public, proposing new ways in which we can enliven the terms of engagement between artists, cities and communities.

This talk will be preceded by a performance by the Vietnamese musicians,KHAC CHI BAMBOO MUSIC. The well-established musical duo will showcase a range songs on rare and unique bamboo instruments.

This free, public event at Richmond City Hall is the first talk in the annual three-part speakers series. Space is limited, so register below!
