Miwa Matreyek is an internationally acclaimed multi-media performer creating live, staged performances as a one-woman show involving the interplay of animation, collage, sound, sculpture, digital software, projection mapping, and her body performance as silhouette.

As a guest, she will be addressing the breadth of her practice, transforming from animation filmmaking to performance, developing her career as solo and collaborative performer and storyteller, and the growing collection of her compellingly creative work that considers the world and it’s pressing issues.

The main presentation and public Q&A will run from 4-5:30PM. After a 15-minute break, a student-only Q&A will be available from 5:45-6:15PM. Students are invited to stay for a more in-depth conversation with the artist.

Miwa Matreyek’s work rises at the intersections of the theatrical, fantastical, illusionistic and cinematic, and yet connects as deeply tangible as her shadow engages with her animate world. She is currently in the arts faculty with SFU Vancouver. She received her MFA in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts. She is a founding member and core collaborator of the performance media group Cloud Eye Control, which makes theatrical productions with integrated animation projections.

Matreyek's art (performances, short films, and installations) have been presented across international conferences, festivals, museums, schools and art centres, including TED, MOMA, Sundance New Frontier, Lincoln Center, Walker, Wexner, Future of Storytelling, Exploratorium, Adler Planetarium, ISEA conference, Meta.Morph (Norway), Anima Mundi (Brazil), REDCAT, TBA festival, Fusebox Festival, and many more.
