Gabriela Godoi and M.E. Sparks | Mother Tongue

Mother Tongue pairs up two phenomenal Emily Carr University of Art + Design alumnae in one striking exhibit.
Opening Reception | February 23, 8-11 PM
This exhibition at Dynamo Arts Association brings together new work by Gabriela Godoi and M.E. Sparks. Both artists explore painting as a material language that, although tied to dominant patriarchal histories, continues to offer potential for empowered feminist discourse surrounding concepts of visual pleasure, resistance, and bodily experience. The artists approach painting as a shared mother tongue of sorts - not only as a shared material language, but as a shared feminist narrative that speaks from and to the body. Through contorted, cut and confrontational forms, symbolism and inner monologues, material opacity and tension, the artists explore the concept of painting as present body, historical body, and misbehaving body; painting as carrier, as woman; painting as an indexical, political, and material utterance.
