HINKYPUNK is a dance work that explores the conflation between identity, iconography and pop culture.

Set on a 4x4x4 foot cube, with a 360 degree original sound score and projections, the piece is seen in the round to both involve and invite the audience into the work. The sequinned costume that adorns the performers is familiar yet mysterious and alluring. Throughout the performance, the viewer witnesses this sequinned character go through a process of creating its own identity, while bombarded by versions of itself—physically, and with light, projection and sound. The protagonist undergoes a series of physical trials to the point of exhaustion, all under a lens of humour, glamour and entertainment.

Based on FakeKnot's Artistic Director, Ralph Escamillan’s lived experiences as a queer artist, the work examines themes of queerness, anonymity and identity expression through the body.

The HINKYPUNK showing is free and all are welcome. Registration is required.

Masks are mandatory at all times for audience members. Enter through the doors at the East Entrance via the Wilson Arts Plaza.

This event is a part of queer art collective The Coven’s two-month residency in The Libby Leshgold gallery. The Coven is Ralph Escamillan, Kevin Fraser, and Ross Wirtanen. Over the course of their time at the Libby Leshgold, the artists will occupy the Media Gallery for seven weeks, hosting weekly events and dance-based programming throughout the University that builds upon their respective multidisciplinary, community-oriented practices as dancers, choreographers, directors, and mentors. Through a series of Vogue Jams and classes, open rehearsals, and performances, The Coven invites an expanded field of collaborators and participants, including local dance organizations Van Vogue Jam and Immigrant Lessons, and members of the Emily Carr University community, to take part in this collaborative creation residency.

The Coven program schedule will be available in the Gallery and on the Gallery’s website. Programs are free and open to all and prioritize members of the LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC communities.

The Coven’s residency is part of a series of exhibitions and programs at the Libby Leshgold Gallery organized by guest curators Phanuel Antwi, Jenn Jackson, and Christian Vistan.
