Macromareal (redux) presents elements of Macromareal (a rising tide lifts all boats), a collaboratively-created body of work by artists Sydney Lancaster + Scott Smallwood drawing attention to the intersection of human activities, time and the tidal environment.

In particular, this project explores the cyclic and durational aspect of work on or near tidal waters, and the ways humans have sought to understand, catalogue, and harness the power of the world’s highest tides.

The artists would like to acknowledge the support of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The University of Alberta, and The Nonesuch Fellowships Program for supporting the original project.

Sydney Lancaster is an Edmonton-based independent multidisciplinary artist and writer. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions in public, artist-run, and commercial galleries in Alberta, BC, Ontario, Quebec, and Newfoundland. She has held residencies in Alberta, Newfoundland, and Nova Scotia, and has received support for her work from the Edmonton Arts Council, the Edmonton Heritage Council, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and the Canada Council (through the Art in the Park program). Her practice considers the intersection of place, objects, memory, and time, and includes site-specific installation and sculpture, photography, video and audio works, printmaking, and mixed media/found object assemblage.

Scott Smallwood is a sound artist, composer, and performer who creates works inspired by discovered textures and forms, through a practice of listening, field recording, and improvisation. He designs experimental electronic instruments and software, as well as sound installations and site-specific performance scenarios. He performs as one-half of the laptop/electronic duo Evidence (with Stephan Moore) and has performed with Seth Cluett, Curtis Bahn, Mark Dresser, Cor Fuhler, John Butcher, Pauline Oliveros, and many others. He has written acoustic and electroacoustic works for a variety of ensembles, most recently for the Continuum Ensemble (Toronto), the New York Virtuoso Singers, the Nash Ensemble of London, and the Princeton Laptop Orchestra. Smallwood currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta, where he is associate professor of composition, improvisation, and electroacoustic music at the University of Alberta.
