Made for This is an exhibition of artists’ books selected from Emily Carr University Library's special collection. The books on display make reference to their medium by drawing attention to and manipulating the formal qualities of the book. These include qualities such as a book may be opened or closed. It may be read from left to right and the pace by which it is read, is set by the reader.
The works included in the exhibition play upon our familiarity with the book, with it’s inherent interactivity and with the act of reading and through various interventions everyday qualities become more notable or in some cases are made strange.
These works refer to their material matter in order to construct meaning. This meaning, whether it is manifested through paper, plastic, Xerox or fabric, is self-referential and is tantamount to the book as a vehicle.
