In Yes, We’re Open, Marika Vandekraats (2016) and Liam Johnstone are evaluating guidance through the forms of ephemeral performative works and archived disruptions. Smoke off the incense drifts, water reshaping a surface, wax melting around the wick. Incidents that outset change and activate a kind of (de)composition, providing a disruption of artificiality; an exchange opens to new growth. Time ticks past as the forms shift, dissolving their borders into the space between.

Within these spaces, a scene unfolds, waiting to guide you in to witness what can be, but more importantly- what can only be now. Yes, We’re Open invites you to breath deeply and seek understanding in wisps of smoke.

This event takes place at James Black Gallery until November 30.

Marika Vandekraats is a visual artist with a BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, currently based in her home city of Vancouver. Her most recent exhibition was a solo show titled Porpoiseful (Este título no sirve para nada), which was exhibited at Quinta del Sordo in Madrid, Spain, as part of a residency with Intercambiador ACART. She previously lived in Rotterdam, NL, where she began experimentation into performances and more site-specific based work. Her work investigates the interaction between materials and objects in ways that examines how they relate and are connected to people.
