Carol Sawyer is a singer and visual artist working primarily with photography, installation, video, and improvised music. Since the early 1990s, Sawyer's visual art work has been concerned with the connections between photography and fiction, performance, memory, and history. She performs regularly with her improvising ensemble ion Zoo (with whom she has released two CDs), as well as in other ad hoc improvising ensembles. Her work is represented by Republic Gallery (Vancouver). Sawyer has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Carol Sawyer: the Natalie Brettschneider Archive, which runs from late October 2017 to early February 2018. This work premiered in April 2016 in the exhibition The Natalie Brettschneider Archive, curated by Heather Anderson at the Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa). It was also shown at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria when the archive was on view in the fall of 2016, curated by Michelle Jacques.
