The Research area invites Emily Carr University faculty and staff to participate in our upcoming EDI Capacity Building grant.

Emily Carr University is a recipient of a two-year federal grant aimed at fostering greater equity, diversity and inclusion within the post-secondary research sector. Our grant will help ECU identify, reveal and remedy systemic barriers that may impede the recruitment, advancement and research of underrepresented and minoritized faculty, specifically from an Academic Affairs and Research perspective.

How to participate? All faculty and staff are invited to the following upcoming events:


ECU Research is working with the group ROOTS - Reclaiming Our Own Truths and Stories, led by facilitators Christianne Paras and Erica Littlewolf.

Paras and Littlewolf are scholars and restorative justice educators and began their work when writing their chapter in the book, ‘Colorizing Restorative Justice: Voicing Our Realities.’ Since then, they have worked together collaboratively in founding ROOTS, a consulting and training organization whose focus is to engage in relational ways of being and healing from an Indigenous worldview, and through a decolonizing, trauma-informed, and racial-equity lens.

ROOTS will kick-start the collaboration with a webinar that will define key terms such as power and privilege in the academy, and will speak about patterns and manifestations of systemic, individual and internalized racism.

Following the webinar, ROOTS will host an all-school dialogue and will work with the ECU community in building affinity caucuses to provide listening spaces across different identity formations.

These sessions will focus on an intersectional approach and will involve receiving, understanding and remembering lived experiences of injustice and struggle across the university.

Join AVP Research Steve Lam in discussing how this grant can connect, frame, amplify and support some of the work already taking place at ECU at the faculty and grassroots level. These planning meetings will inform the future direction of this two-year grant.
