Retooling Critique Workshop for ECU Faculty and Staff

Join us for a pre-recorded presentation + model of study with Retooling Critique's, Billie Lee and Judith Leemann, where we invite you to think together on transforming art pedagogy and critique practices in an open and experimental format.
Retooling Critique is a pedagogy group of artists, educators, and activists working in different institutions and organizations for the study of studio critique, with particular focus on its relation to racial equity and inclusion. We work to transform art pedagogy, curriculum, and programming to construct a more inclusive, equitable, critical, and representative reality within the institution. Initially convened by Judith Leemann at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2017, the working group has presented at the Art Center College of Design, Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design, Hartford Art School, and as part of the Making & Being conversation series organized by BFAMFAPhD at Hauser & Wirth.
Join us for a pre-recorded presentation and model of study with two members of Retooling Critique, Billie Lee and Judith Leemann, where we invite you to think together on transforming art pedagogy and critique practices in an open and experimental format. Some of the questions that we are interested in asking are: How will studio critique practices need to be retooled to align with broader cultural and political shifts within and beyond the institution? What approaches can we bring to see, slow down, and retool critique’s mechanisms? How can we cultivate an ethics of engagement that actively addresses and embraces social difference, while being responsive to the divergent needs of our turbulent time?
This model of study consists of two parts:
An audio recorded presentation and materials for study (readings and links), which are available on this Moodle site: https://courses.ecuad.ca/course/view.php?id=5553. We ask faculty to do this 2-3 hour prep work in advance to maximize our virtual conversation and to avoid screen fatigue.
A 2-hour virtual meeting on Nov 6th at 11:30am to engage the materials that have been provided with structured activities and facilitated conversation. We will provide a zoom link closer to the meeting date.
*With the intention of inviting a more honest conversion, we ask that our conversation “stay in the room” and not be recorded. We encourage faculty and staff to share their own takeaways in writing or verbally with those who could not attend.
