Unsettling Settlers: Intervention game is a collective response to the popular board game Settlers of Catan (re-named CATAN). By appropriating the format of a CATAN “expansion pack”, the artist has re-imagined the game by utilizing social practice methodologies focused on collective research and co-creation. Inspired by open-source frameworks prioritizing free access, co-authorship, and ongoing development through community contributions, the process of creating Unsettling Settlers: Intervention game has included over two years of play test sessions and consultations with hundreds of community members. Unsettling Settlers: Intervention game aims to carve out a space where participants get to choose their own adventure, practice strategies, experiment with critical alternatives and engage in counterhegemonic narratives of settlement. The intervention is designed to disrupt our expectations and question the impact of our strategies.

Description: Over the past two years, Jean Chisholm and Laura Kozak initiated a Place-Based Collective at Emily Carr as an informal way for students and faculty to collaborate and share in learning and project-making around a series of place-based propositions. In response to a growing dissociation from place that is a consequence of many mounting conditions and dynamics in urban centres, the work of this Collective has included a hosting series of roundtables (Building Relationships Through the Language of Place, Matriarchal Strategies in Design, Permaculture as Method and Listening to Land), a Social Practice course in the summer of 2021 (CCID 300 – Practicing Neighbourliness), and Place-Based Field School (spring 2022). In each of these iterations, emphasis is placed on processes that support relationships with community and place.

Description: Daphne Plessner will present a newly launched art project called The Deer Tour (https://www.tree-museum.com/deer-tour), a musically enhanced, audio intervention, made up of 8 audio episodes, that is not only virtual, but is installed as an intervention at roadside on Pender Island. The Deer Tour that takes listeners on a journey through the complexity of colonial assumptions of human exceptionalism, but through the lens of personal experiences of a family of deer, including anecdotes and reflections on local (Pender Island) settler behaviours and practices, in the context of the rampant urbanisation of the island – the deer’s habitat -- and its effects on the lives of the deer. The Deer Tour importantly presents the voices of WSANEC/Indigenous speakers who share origin stories and commentaries that open-up counter narratives of relations to deer, and that explore the implications of such relationships, presenting WSANEC approaches to social life and political governance at a local level.

Description: This online event is a conversation between Vanessa Kwan, Germaine Koh, Diyan Achjadi, and Cameron Cartiere – four artists and cultural producers who have been involved in a broad range of public art and social practice projects that directly collaborate with city departments and community groups. Moderated by Justin Langlois, also a practicing artist in the public realm, this conversation promises to be a highly dynamic and thoughtful reflection on the ways in which artists can bring new perspectives, connections, and challenges to the municipal partners who strive to keep our urban spaces working above and below the pavement.

Description: Randy Lee Cutler and Ingrid Koenig will present on the experience of Leaning Out of Windows (LOoW) a six-year SSHRC funded interdisciplinary project (2016 to 2023) that considered the space of co-thought through art and science collaboration, with socially-engaged practices involving workshops, seminars, multiple curatorial initiatives, symposiums, and publications. In this venture artists and physicists were brought together to share the quest to understand the nature of reality. Leaning Out of Windows recognizes the important role that collaborations between art and science play in framing the cultural understanding of the universe. Working across artistic disciplines and discursive communities, participants brought profoundly different expertise to the project ranging from strategic responses in thinking, making, and methodologies of translation.

Description: Using Death Conversation Game, creator/artist Angela Fama will be hosting an interactive collaborative conversation on death. The subject's discussed will be defined through shared conversation, inspired by questions presented, and how you chose to interpret them. This isn’t a standardized game, where there’s a winner or loser, this is instead a co-created space for exploring ideas, sharing, listening, and further questioning - as it is, in the moment.
