Steven Brekelmans | One Man Band

Brekelmans plays with viewer perception in his new exhibit at Dynamo Arts Association.
Opening Reception | Friday, February 9, 7-9 PM
Stop by Dynamo Arts Association to see alumnus Steven Brekelmans' (1998) new exhibit, One Man Band. Consider the studio as jam space.
Small gestures - experiments - are performed and collected. While each work is born of a distinct action there emerges an evolving, common theme. Over time every surface is covered with these efforts, groups of objects, stacks of paper, sculptures that went nowhere, successful maquettes and unsatisfying drawings. Stepping back, it is unclear where one work begins and another ends. These things run together into a coherent whole, to be reconsidered in its entirety.
In this new work by Vancouver artist Steven Brekelmans, original sculptures share shelf space with knick-knacks, collections of ordinary objects, model kits, ceramics, carvings and comic books. Presented as a whole, one may wonder: which of these objects are important? Which have value and which should be put on display, kept in shoeboxes, recycled or simply thrown out? Which objects are successful and which are failures?
