Artist and Emily Carr University faculty member Gwenessa Lam has joined Equinox Gallery’s roster of outstanding creative practitioners.

“Equinox Gallery is thrilled to announce representation of artist Gwenessa Lam,” the gallery stated in a recent press release.

“Lam’s artwork stems from interests in perception and the compression of time and memory within images. Working in a variety of media including drawing and painting, Lam’s recent projects explore the ways in which cultural narratives are formed and evolve through historical objects and museum artifacts. Her work often aims to bring visibility to the overlooked or unseen elements which shape our environment in small and large ways.”

The gallery also acknowledged the “work and dedication of former Republic Gallery Owner/Director Pantea Haghighi and her staff in representing Gwenessa Lam so thoughtfully for many years.”

Upon joining ECU in 2020 as Associate Professor in Painting + Drawing in the Audain Faculty of Art, Gwenessa took a moment to speak with me about her multidisciplinary practice.

“I’m always interested in questions that don't have an answer,” she told me at the time. “At the heart of any project that I do, I’m always questioning what it is I’m looking at. That’s the question that often begins a project.”
