This spring in the Library’s upper level reading area we are featuring books and resources honouring the stories, work and histories of Black writers, artists, theorists, educators and librarians.

We are inviting you to share Black creators that inspire you so we can continue to build the reading area, add resources to our online reading list, and acquire materials for the library collection.

The corresponding online guide features a reading list of library materials displayed in the reading area. It also includes links to online resources like streaming videos and online articles. The goal of the online reading guide is to highlight the items in the library collection that centre Black experiences and Black brilliance.

We recognize the complexities and controversies of developing a resource list on such a broad spectrum of identities into one place. Because of this, we have also included a selection of articles that document the ongoing conversation and criticisms around Black History Month displays. We always welcome dialogue from the community and encourage feedback from you.

We are adding new material to the physical reading area and online guide regularly so check back often! Let us know if you have any suggestions and we can add them to our reading list.

You can consider these prompts if you’d like to share with us using the whiteboard in the reading area, the padlet on the corresponding online guide, through our Instagram account (@ecu_library), or through the library suggestion form:

  • Who is your favourite Black designer, artist, filmmaker, collective, poet?

  • Who is a Black creator that has had an impact on your work?

  • Who is a Black creator you would like to learn more about?

  • What books/media on or about Black creators would you like to see added to the collection?
