Including Generative AI Guidelines on your Course Outline

All Course Instructors are encouraged to include a section on their Course Outline on appropriate use of Generative AI in their course. These expectations should be discussed early in the course.

Your course outline should include a statement on Gen AI followed by what your expectations for the class are.

Generative artificial intelligence (Generative AI or GenAI) is a category of AI systems capable of generating text, images, or other media in response to prompts. These systems include ChatGPT and its variants Bing (built by OpenAI) and Bard (built by Google) among several others. Other Generative AI models include artificial intelligence art systems such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and DALL-E.[1]

Your instructor is responsible for deciding which softwares, to what extent, and in what instances, you may use GenAI in this class.

The following are sample sentences you may use or adapt on your course outlines and assignments to clarify appropriate use of GenAI in your course.


Students are encouraged/required to use GenAI on indicated/all assignments.

Students who do not wish to use Generative AI because of privacy concerns can speak with the instructor for alternative arrangements.

Students will be asked to develop work integrating GenAI tools into their process.

All content made with GenAI should be cited.


Students can use Generative AI in certain circumstance.

Students may use only the following generative artificial intelligence tools in completing their assignments for this course.

Students may only use Generative AI softwares that provide their source material citations (eg. Bing rather than ChatGPT)

Students will be asked to develop work integrating AI tools into their process.

Students can use Generative AI in the research and ideation for their assignment.

It is the student’s responsibility to understand the limitations of GenAI tools, and to fact check and bias check content generated in this way.

In this course GenAI can be used for formative (eg brainstorming) not summative work (not used to generate answers submitted for assignments).

Students who have accommodations through accessibility services to use AI should discuss them with the instructor early in the course.

All content made with Generative AI should be cited.

Generative AI work not cited is considered plagiarism and will result in a zero for the assignment/reporting the student for violation of Academic Integrity rules.


The use of Generative AI is prohibited in this class for all assignments.

All work submitted in this class must be solely the student’s own original work.

Use of any generative AI technology in the completion of assignments is prohibited, including but not limited to researching answers, summarizing or paraphrasing texts, making imagery, coding, and translating.

Use of generative AI in this course will be considered use of an unauthorized aid which is a form of cheating.

Students found to be using Generative AI will receive a zero for the assignment.
