A collaborative display about accessibility

“Disability is a Culture, a Pace, and a Community, one that offers a space of; listening, inquiring, questioning, reflection, nourishment, validation, understanding, learning, and breathing. To build a collection of voices is to build more of ourselves out into the world. To find ourselves amongst the pages, in podcasts, on films with accurate spacious representation by and from other Disability and / or NeuroDivergent Artists and Designers is the foundation of our learning.”

Come join us and explore this display in the library from Oct. 1-Dec. 15, 2021 presented in collaboration with Taryn Goodwin (BFA 2022) and the folks of the ECUAD Neurodivergent and Disability Community. The display features books on accessibility, dis/ability, chronic illness, and neurodiversity, including the exhibition catalogue, The Missing Culture of ECUAD 2021: A Disability & Neuro-Divergent Community Building Initiative and Group Exhibition. This exhibition catalogue was produced by members of the ECUAD Neurodivergent and Disability Community - an open group that meets regularly on Thursdays at 11:30 via Zoom and works to make a space for our neuro-essential community: https://ecudisabilitycollective.weeblysite.com/.

In addition to the book display there will be a comfortable seating area with a cocoon hammock chair, bean bag chairs, ear plugs and plenty of plants. We will have a white board so you can tell us your access needs and let us know what we can do to make the library more accessible. The ECU Library is committed to providing an inclusive environment with equal access for all students, faculty and staff of the University. We aim to provide equal access to our library services and collections. We are learning, growing and we want to work with you to meet your access needs.


  • Entrance is on the second level. Doors are kept open during library open hours.

  • Elevator is located towards the west side of the library

  • Washrooms are all single stall, accessible and gender neutral. They are located on the north side of the upper level; and northeast side of the lower level

  • Where the library building or facilities restrict access, do not hesitate to ask for assistance.

  • The stacks or shelves in some parts of the library are high and narrow, and may not be accessible to all users. If you have difficulty reaching or lifting materials in the book stacks, or operating the library's self-serve photocopiers, printers or scanners, please contact the library to arrange service library@ecuad.ca, 604 844 3840, or visit the Service Desk on the upper level.

  • Books that are available in the library can be put on hold by logging into your account through the Library Catalogue. Items will be held for you at the Service Desk and you will receive a notification when they are ready to be picked up.

  • If you have a student aide, the library can issue a card that allows your aide to borrow library materials on your behalf. This can be arranged at the Service Desk.

  • Research help services can be offered in person when the library is opened or online by appointment if you need help accessing materials in accessible formats.
