Looking for a summer learning experience but tired of staring at a screen all day? Want to develop your creativity without spending the most beautiful time of year indoors?

You're in luck. Emily Carr just launched a series of Explore Your City Summer Workshops that will teach you artistic skills and techniques through safe outdoor studies.

All four workshops are taught by renown artists and educators, and feature self-guided tours and virtual discussions to help you cultivate your creative practice.

If you're interested in painting, drawing or photography, these workshops are an accessible way to develop your talents while introducing you to the inspiration in your own backyard!

En Plein Air: Discovering Nature | Starts Saturday, August 7 | 4 Weeks

Discover the pleasures and restraints of making in the outdoors, including location scouting, materials, observation and recording. Using simple drawing and/or painting techniques and materials, create studies of flora, fauna and landscapes that capture the changeability of natural environments.

En Plein Air: Discovering the City | Starts Sunday, August 8 | 4 Weeks

Explore your city’s dynamic and varied urban spaces in this introductory workshop. Learn about the pleasures and restraints of making in the outdoors, including location scouting, materials, observation and recording. Using simple drawing and/or painting tools and techniques, create studies of local architecture, urban gardens and city landscapes.

Vancouver Public Art | Starts Saturday, July 17 | 2 Weeks

From iconic installations to lesser-known local gems, discover Vancouver’s diverse and exciting public artworks. Gain insight into the role of public art within society and community spaces, while you discover new sites, rediscover favourite long-time installations, and participate in discussions about space and place-making in Vancouver neighborhoods!

Photo Story: Spaces, Places + the Everyday | Starts Saturday, August 7 | 4 Weeks

From the history of street photography, to self-portraits, to the ethics of documenting people in public spaces, this workshop exposes the many possibilities of photographic storytelling. You will learn about compositional strategies, lighting techniques and viewer perspective to help develop an eye for the "decisive moment."
