Who can access counselling services?

Our counselling services are available to all enrolled full and part-time degree students residing in BC.

Is counselling available to students out of province or out of country?

Counselling is a regulated profession and has a code of ethics, standards of practice and licensing requirements to which every counsellor must adhere. A violation of these ethics and standards can result in a counsellor losing their license to practice. All of us in the EC Counselling office are Registered Clinical Counsellors and are licensed to practice in BC. Every province has different licensing requirements that must be met. Therefore, counsellors licensed in BC are not allowed to provide counselling in other provinces or countries where they are not licensed.

How do I sign up for counselling?

To book an appointment, email counselling@ecuad.ca. We will respond to your email within 24 hours (Monday through Friday, 9:30am to 3:30pm).

If you are experiencing an emergency, please contact 911 or go to the emergency department at your local hospital.

How long do I have to wait to see a counsellor?

For students who are experiencing trauma or crises, you can get an appointment with a counsellor within a day.

For students who want ongoing counselling, waitlists vary throughout the academic year. Please contact counselling@ecuad.ca for current information on the waitlist.

As of September 21, 2022, the wait time to see a counsellor is approximately 4 weeks.

How many sessions do I get?

The counselling office provides up to 8 weekly sessions. Once you have utilized the 8 sessions, you are eligible for another 8 sessions once all other students on the waitlist have been seen.

Can I get video counselling?

While some agencies and private practitioners may be offering video counselling, at Emily Carr our counselling appointments are by phone only. This is for reasons of privacy, security and confidentiality.

What is the cancellation policy?

We require at least 48 hours advance notice if you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment. When there is a waitlist, any cancellations will count as a session.
