The Emily Carr University Library is now offering free Community Borrower cards to those who identify as First Nations, Métis, or Inuit.

Indigenous community members interested in acquiring a card should visit us at our service desk in the library on the second level. We will ask for a piece of ID, an email address, phone number, and current address in order to set up the account. Cards can be renewed in-person on an annual basis.

Our collections are focused primarily on contemporary art, media, design, and critical and cultural studies. We are currently prioritizing acquiring new materials that centre intersectional, Indigenous, and anti-racist perspectives.

Community members can borrow up to 25 books, graphic novels, or exhibition catalogues for three weeks at a time. Items can be renewed twice unless recalled by another patron. Board games and sports equipment can be borrowed for a week at a time. Work spaces (with the exception of the student study rooms) are also open to the community - visitors can use computers, printers and scanners, and may consult the Research Help desk, although priority is given to students if it is busy. Some resources are only available for in-library use: DVDs, electronic resource databases, e-books, and current periodicals. Special collections, artists’ books and archives can be consulted by appointment only.

Community Borrowing cards are also available to members of the general public, at a cost of $30 per year. Seniors receive a 50% discount on the cost of a membership. ECU alumni also qualify for free Community Borrowing cards. Please share this information with anybody you know who may be interested in becoming a Community Borrower!
