The culmination of two years of intensive artistic research, A Distant Presence showcases the results of studio-based education and critiques integrated with seminar readings and discussions.

This thesis exhibition showcases the diverse practices made by the MFA Low Residency class of 2023, with work addressing the materiality of plastic and chronic anxiety, thrifting stories, Philippine colonial economies, repetition and caregiving, ‘two-eyed seeing’ between Western and Indigenous Métis knowledge, grief, loss and memory through/of the natural world, cognitive biases and optimism, land-based practices from an Indigenous perspective, how and why we build things, Bermuda’s colonial history on land and water and finally, re-membering presence and the “ongoingness” of life through practices including animation, ceramics, drawing, filmmaking, installation, painting, photography, and sculpture

Participating artists: Lucas Anderson, Lewis Bennett, Maria Alethea Canlas, Megan Carroll, Lara Felsing, Valentina Figueroa, Carla Lipkin, Michelle Markatos, April Matisz, Sydney Pickering, Cody Smith, Rachel Swinburne, and Joyce Yam.

The thesis exhibition and opening reception are held at Emily Carr University’s Michael O’Brian Exhibition Commons and RBC Gallery at 520 East 1st Ave, Vancouver, British Columbia.
