Announcing the 2023 Graduation Award Winners

This year, 33 students received graduation awards in acknowledgement of their stellar work and accomplishments.
The Graduating Class of 2023 helped produce the most expansive edition of The Show, ECU’s annual graduating student exhibition, since 2019.
You can view their superb art and design works now online via ECU’s fully searchable, interactive web gallery spotlighting their innovative and spellbinding projects.
Our reputable judges confer 69 graduation awards and honourable mentions to 59 individual recipients for their outstanding achievements. In total, students received awards valued at $28,850 based on their works in The Show, their GPAs, or a combination of the two.
Several students received multiple honours:
- Sam Street (BMA) won the Basically Good Media Lab Student Research Award for New Media and Sound Arts and The President’s Media Awards for Excellence (Best in Installation) for their project, dove.
- Clyde Montgomery (BDes) won the DESIS Radical Sustainability Award and received an honourable mention for the Emily Carr Alumni Association Graduation Award for Community Engagement for their project, TAPEWORM corp.
- Kashish Hukku Jani (BDes) won the ECU Graduation Awards for Anti-Racism and Social Justice (Design) and the Emily Carr Alumni Association Graduation Award for Community Engagement for their project, कला.
- Shiva Khaef Panah (BFA) won the Vancouver Art Attack Award and an honourable mention for the ECU Graduation Award for Anti-Racism and Social Justice (Visual Arts) for their project, Kooch در کوچ dar در کوچ Kooch.
- Aretha Pereira (BFA) won the Opus Art Supplies Graduation Award (BFA) and an honourable mention for the John C. Kerr Chancellor Emeritus Awards for Excellence in Visual Arts for their project, MAP (of sorts).
- Amy Longo (BFA) won honourable mentions for both the John C. Kerr Chancellor Emeritus Awards for Excellence in Visual Arts and the Opus Art Supplies Graduation Award (BFA) for their project, Young & Old.
- Jennifer Li (BMA) won a Saralee James Memorial Award and the The President’s Media Awards for Excellence (Best in Film) for their project, SOLD.
- Si Chen (BMA) won a Saralee James Memorial Award and a VIVO Award for Distribution for their project, Curtain Fall.
- Sophia (Sumin) Mok (BMA) won the Sophie Burnett Memorial Award and an honourable mention for the The President’s Media Awards for Excellence (Best in 3D Computer Animation) for their project, Documents of Life.
- Thomas Mai (BMA) won a VIVO Award for Distribution and an honourable mention for The President’s Media Awards for Excellence (Best in Film) for their project, Untitled Us.
