If you would like to suggest the library purchase new material for the collection to support your course content, please email Ana Diab.

Use the Databases A-Z list to find our complete digital collection, including eBooks, online journals and magazine articles, abstract and index databases, digital image collections, streaming video, and eCollections. You can also use the General Search feature on the library home page to search multiple databases at once.

Instructors can place books, eBooks, videos and streaming media on reserve for a specific course. Students are able to view a list of online reserve items for their course on the Reserves List page. We are only able to place certain items on reserve lists; if you are looking to provide specific articles to your students, it is better to supply them with a permanent link on Moodle.

Please note that reserve items may not be immediately available to students, as processing time may be up to a week during peak periods throughout each term. Faculty are encouraged to submit reserve requests early to ensure they will be processed and available to students at the start of term.

You may request an interlibrary loan for material not owned by the Emily Carr University Library. Books and journal articles will be borrowed by the Emily Carr University Library on your behalf from other BC post-secondary libraries.

Interlibrary loans can be requested through the online ILL form.

If you would like to show a film to your class you can also make a media booking. Please plan ahead whenever possible and request your bookings well in advance of your proposed screening dates. A minimum of two weeks’ notice is required in order to guarantee your bookings will be available, though requests are taken at any time. Faculty are encouraged to submit screening schedules for the semester in advance of the start of semester to allow the Media Booking Department ample time to confirm requests. Please note: due to the rush at the start of each semester, it may take longer for the Media Booking Department to process your requests. Please submit media requests as soon as possible.

Emily Carr has a growing collection 2,000+ artists’ books that reflect the diversity of publishing practices in contemporary art. Established with a donation from Ian Wallace, the collection builds upon some exemplary samples of early avant-garde, conceptual artist’s books. Viewed as a teaching collection, the Library encourages faculty across all disciplines to explore different ways of integrating artists’ books into their curriculum.

The ECU Archives acquires, preserves and makes available records documenting the history of Emily Carr University of Art and Design. The holdings consist of a broad range of materials including publications, textual records, course calendars, video recordings, audio recordings and photographs dating from 1925 to present. To search archival descriptions, visit our online archives database.

At this time, access to the physical materials in the ECU Archives are available by appointment only. If you are interested in using the ECU Archives please contact us to arrange a time.

The ECU Archive also includes a great selection of digitized archival material that can be found online as part of our eCollections @ Emily Carr.

The library and archives provide instructional services across the curriculum. Through our instruction offerings we aim to collaborate meaningfully with you to teach critical information literacy, digital literacy, and library and archives research skills. We are interested in working with you to develop workshops, share resources and activities, and co-create course content in areas where your course learning goals intersect with library/archives. Your liaison librarian can help with:

• Finding copyright compliant versions of readings and videos, which may include finding a version through library resources, ordering a PDF copy through interlibrary loan, or purchasing a new resource;

• Providing stable links for online library resources. Links from many databases are often sessional and will time out. We can provide the permalinks so students will be able to access the resource directly.

• Researching resources that relate to your course content. We can work with you to identify materials from our extensive digital collections that will support your course reading lists.

• Creating a custom library research guide that you can link to or embed in your Moodle course. Find examples our research guides.

• Acquiring electronic versions of resources such as e-books and streaming video. This is not always possible due to licensing restrictions and publishing models, but we can check to see if the books and videos you use for your courses are available online.

• Providing workshops, lectures and demonstrations on topics relating to research, archives, and information literacy.

Our library team is also available to support your research projects. This may include support with creating a research data management plan, hosting your research outcomes and creating a researcher profile within our institutional repository, and assigning your research outcomes a persistent DOI (digital object identifier). These services are available for any kind of research outcome, for example: research creation, creative or arts-based research, formal articles, and posters.
