Painting
Painting at Emily Carr University explores colour, image, structure, surface and support combined with a rigorous dialogue about painting today. Through a variety of approaches, students build on the possibilities in the discipline while reconsidering historical precedents to convey new meanings.
Whether narrative or abstract, in the representation of images or shapes and forms, students employ a range of materials including acrylic and oil paints along with other media. Students are encouraged to consider appropriate techniques, theoretical challenges and technical models to suit their interests. Painting may also integrate digital and analogue data to form new hybrids in this classic art form. Presentations, projects, individual and group critiques, readings and exercises are part of the teaching structure. A specialized woodshop supports the area.
