GALLERY 101 proudly presents: In Collaboration with the Aborginal Curatorial Collective Making Space/Sharing Place

Maria Hupfield (Associate Professor, ECI) and Stephen Foster create compelling photographic images that address personal and community power relations through the use of double personas and duplicity. The artists engage in vital social and political issues through the use of balance and tension that results from an uneasy symmetry within the images. Maria Hupfield explores issues surrounding Native women, gender issues, and deconstructing stereotypes. Her work is about "reclaiming space, moving forward, shifting expectations and making a positive as well as assertive mark in a redrawing of the lines that define us and the space through which we move." Stephen Foster's work explores political issues of indigenous representation in popular culture. He is interested in the shifts that can occur between personal imagery and political discourses.
