Susan Stewart - Philosopher's Cafe

Join Susan Stewart, Associate Dean - Integrated Studies, Academic Administration, on the first Thursday of every month at the Vancouver Art Gallery for a three part series considering counter narratives within mainstream feminism.

This fall the Philosophers' Café works with the exhibition WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution as a starting point to discuss three counter narratives within mainstream feminism. Above all we will focus on the tensions that rise up between assumptions that all women are the same, a key operating strategy within second wave feminism, and difference, as articulated around issues of race, sex and gender.

Masculinity and Feminism

This café will address masculinity and feminism. We will consider representations of men by second wave feminist artists, and the hidden and to some degree censored text of heterosexual desire. We will discuss the utility of contemporary masculinity studies and ask such questions as: What has the feminist movement meant for men? Do we still live in patriarchal times? What are dominant models of masculinity? How do ideas about race, class, and sexuality complicate our understanding of masculinity? What can we learn from the study of masculinities?

Joining us will be Helen Hok-Sze Leung, from the Department of Women Studies at Simon Fraser University.

The Vancouver Art Gallery is an ongoing partner with the Philosophers' Café founders, Simon Fraser University's Continuing Education.
